In January of 2019, I made a resolution to get more into running. I challenged my body and mind to run one 5k a month. I wanted 12 medals in hand by New Year’s Eve. It was ambitious, especially considering I have so many challenges with my legs and ankles. But with a mix of OTF and regular podiatrist appoints, I was well on my way.
On this journey, a unique opportunity was presented. Do a race in Disney. I have seen so many fellow TIU girls dressing up, running in the parks and having the best time. I approached some girlfriends and found out, no one does the 5k - it was all about the 10k or half marathon. Could I do that? YOLO I signed up for the 10k.
I joined a couple Run Disney Facebook groups and it was great to have support and community but most importantly - sharing tips! So I want to pass along some tips and highlight my journey to get the heaviest medal of my collection SO FAR!
Bib Pickup
Typically you worry about race day and that’s about it. Disney is a well oiled machine and they know how to get fans to great an epic weekend and spend money! Starting the Thursday before race days (Friday AM - 5k, Saturday AM - 10k, Sunday AM - Half) Expo is open for bib pick up and so much more! As a part of your package you get your bib and a finisher shirt. The kicker, you have two different locations to go to each. But, I was totally ok with that! I picked up my bib and was ushered into the official Run Disney shopping center. They had shirts, jackets, cups, pins, etc. They had custom gear per race. I snagged a shirt that said “I did it” in the 10k theme. A little presumptions but I knew I would finish! I was happy I got to use my annual pass discount! My only complaint is that they ran out of 10k pins - seems the eBay crowd got to the store early, annoying! And before you leave, character photos!
Expo
Once you get your bib you get a coupon to go pick up your shirt in the next building. In the expo exhibit hall there are tons of booths filled with various companies related to running. They have fun running skirts to complete the perfect princess outfit, as well as headbands that look like tiaras!
You can also get fitted for running sneakers, grab a pair of non slip sunglasses or find the perfect set of headphones for race day!
Race Day
This is an early wake up call! Race starts at 5:30am but you need to hop on a bus between 4 - 4:30am.
Photo Ops
Depending on how long your race is, you will see a variety of character photo stops along the course. There is typically a short line but it works the same as a normal character picture opportunity just make sure that your bib number is clearly visible. You do not need to scan your magic band the Disney cast will send you your picture by your bib number. On race day make sure to link your photo pass to your race and bib number. Through out the day all the photos will load on the My Disney Experience app. You will also see little green tents, these are the photographers taking action shots of the runners. Keep in mind they have wide lens so they capture pictures further away so make sure to wave and smile and again make sure your bib number is clearly visible!
Show off the medal
The Disney staff is amazing at making all the runners feel amazing. Going to the parks right after a race is the best idea! Every cast member will congratulate you on your race and the photographers do an amazing job at capturing pictures of you in the park with your medal. They are all so proud of the runners!
Disney races are so much fun! Being able to run in the parks, take pictures with characters, dress up as your favorite princess and have a day at the parks after is truly magic! So get out there and have fun!
