Workout Recovery

Magnesium Mocktail

They are all the rage right now and rightfully so! Magnesium is a great supplement for muscle recovery and for relaxation. I make the sleepy time Mocktail every night! I add tart cherry juice (100% concentrate with no added sugar) and a sparkling water for the fancy thrill and to lessen the tart taste!

Cold Plunge

The best time to cold plunge is after an intense workout. It helps the muscles recover faster, boosts your metabolism and helps with immunity. I try to do about 2-3 minute plunge. If you don’t have a heated pool that’s the perfect option if you don’t have access to a fancy spa.

Sauna

Also have great recovery and metabolism benefits as well as improved circulation. I try to do the sauna for at least 20minutes.

Compression Sleeves

I run in compression socks to help with blood flow and circulation as recommended by my doctor. It has helped me so much in avoiding shin splints and not feeling as sore after a run.

I also got these sleeves on Amazon to have as home to help in many leg day recovery.

The Best Damn Race is a running series created for runners by runners. The goal is to provide a big race experience at a local race price. It doesn’t matter if you are an elite runner, first timer, walker, or using a baby jogger, we want you to have the best DAMN race experience.

They are best known for the fun philosophy “RUN, EAT, DRINK, PARTY!”. The after party at the finish line is truly like no other and such a great time! There’s free food, free beer, free drinks and an epic party!

A Christmas Carol: The Musical

December 4th & 5th

A Christmas Carol is a spectacular adaptation of Charles Dickens’ most well-known story, as Ebenezer Scrooge and his ghostly encounters come to life in this thrilling stage adaptation. Broadway heavy hitters, Alan Menken (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Disney’s The Little Mermaid) and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical, Once on This Island), breathe fantastic life into the classic tale of A Christmas Carol.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a prosperous curmudgeon who believes that personal wealth is far more valuable than the happiness and comfort of others. With an infuriated “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge summates his feelings of Christmas tidings and charitable giving, but he’s forced to face his selfish ways when three ghosts on Christmas Eve lead him through his Past, Present and Future. Thanks to their guidance, Scrooge recognizes his faults and greets Christmas morning with a cheerful “Happy Christmas” before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those that mean the most to him.

But if they’ve been bad, they’ll get a lot more than a lump of coal—they’ll have to face Krampus.

RunDisney

In January of 2019, I made a resolution to get more into running. I challenged my body and mind to run one 5k a month. I wanted 12 medals in hand by New Year’s Eve. It was ambitious, especially considering I have so many challenges with my legs and ankles. But with a mix of OTF and regular podiatrist appoints, I was well on my way.

On this journey, a unique opportunity was presented. Do a race in Disney. I have seen so many fellow TIU girls dressing up, running in the parks and having the best time. I approached some girlfriends and found out, no one does the 5k - it was all about the 10k or half marathon. Could I do that? YOLO I signed up for the 10k.

I joined a couple Run Disney Facebook groups and it was great to have support and community but most importantly - sharing tips! So I want to pass along some tips and highlight my journey to get the heaviest medal of my collection SO FAR!

Bib Pickup

Typically you worry about race day and that’s about it. Disney is a well oiled machine and they know how to get fans to great an epic weekend and spend money! Starting the Thursday before race days (Friday AM - 5k, Saturday AM - 10k, Sunday AM - Half) Expo is open for bib pick up and so much more! As a part of your package you get your bib and a finisher shirt. The kicker, you have two different locations to go to each. But, I was totally ok with that! I picked up my bib and was ushered into the official Run Disney shopping center. They had shirts, jackets, cups, pins, etc. They had custom gear per race. I snagged a shirt that said “I did it” in the 10k theme. A little presumptions but I knew I would finish! I was happy I got to use my annual pass discount! My only complaint is that they ran out of 10k pins - seems the eBay crowd got to the store early, annoying! And before you leave, character photos!

IMG_20191102_181707_656.jpg

Expo

Once you get your bib you get a coupon to go pick up your shirt in the next building. In the expo exhibit hall there are tons of booths filled with various companies related to running. Photo Ops

Depending on how long your race is, you will see a variety of character photo stops along the course. There is typically a short line but it works the same as a normal character picture opportunity just make sure that your bib number is clearly visible. You do not need to scan your magic band the Disney cast will send you your picture by your bib number. On race day make sure to link your photo pass to your race and bib number. Through out the day all the photos will load on the My Disney Experience app. You will also see little green tents, these are the photographers taking action shots of the runners. Keep in mind they have wide lens so they capture pictures further away so make sure to wave and smile and again make sure your bib number is clearly visible!

Show off the medal

The Disney staff is amazing at making all the runners feel amazing. Going to the parks right after a race is the best idea! Every cast member will congratulate you on your race and the photographers do an amazing job at capturing pictures of you in the park with your medal. They are all so proud of the runners!

Disney races are so much fun! Being able to run in the parks, take pictures with characters, dress up as your favorite princess and have a day at the parks after is truly magic! So get out there and have fun!

Packing 101

I travel, a lot! Airports can be so stressful so I try to travel with just a carry on to avoid having to check a luggage. The key is to get organized so to not forget anything or overpack.

Screenshot_20190618-091240_Instagram.jpg

Weather

Knowing the weather in advance can help pack. Will it be cold at night? Make sure to layer, bring a long sleeve shirt to throw on top or a jacket if it is colder. Will you be out in the sun? Bring sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.

Pictured, Old Navy green long sleeve with cut off shorts.

DSC_5803.jpg

Layouts

Layout each outfit to see everything you need for it. Put it together with accessories so you know what has to go in your bag. I usually plan a day and a night outfit depending on what I am doing on my trip.

Pictured matching performance set from Old Navy

20190618_092240.jpg

Matching

I try to stick with similar pieces so I can use the same accessories. I stick with blacks and greys or browns and neutrals. This helps with jewelry, jackets and shoes. Speaking of shoes, if you plan to walk opt for comfort and cute with a pair of vans or keds.

Working Out While Traveling

When you are home, you are in the groove. You have your routine. You have the time set aside. You have the schedule at your gym. Then you travel. It somehow all goes out the window. There is so much to do in a new place, working out is the last thing on most people’s mind. I’m here to change that mentality. It’s super easy and doesn’t take up that much time, promise!

I’m a carry on type of traveler, so I always try to skip the bulk. I always check in advance what is available in terms of a hotel gym and equipment included. Hotel gym will usually have basic weights, a few cardio machines and mats to use as you wish. What if they don’t have a gym? No problem! I’ll go through some of my favorite in room options.

tiu bands.png

Resistance bands! This is hands down the easiest way to get a workout in with one piece of tiny equipment that can fit in your pocket! Tone It Up offers so many great, easy & quick workouts on their mobile app. You can type in “booty bands” and voila!

yoga mat.jpg

I do a lot of travel for business so I’m usually walking all over meeting halls or exhibit floors extremely stressed out. I try to start my day off with a stretch and a quick 20 minute workout to get my blood flowing. A fellow TIU girl gave me this foldable yoga mat when she was my secret santa a couple years back. It has been a lifesaver! Easy to fold and put in my suitcase and much more comfortable than a hotel towel - do not ever just workout on those floors!

IMG_9965.JPG

If you are traveling for leisure, combine exploring and working out! I always search for a bike tour of a new city! Carve out 2 hours of your day and pack in a fun exciting tour of the destination and get some great cardio in at the same time. The tour guides are locals with tons of experience and recommendations.
