Sketching in the Galleries of the Orlando Museum of Art

On the first Saturday of every month drawing and sketching supplies will be available for artists of all ages to use. You can enjoy an afternoon at the museum and become inspired by artwork in the galleries!

This is a drop-in program, no pre-registration required. Free with admission to the gallery.

There is also a new program "Access for All at OMA," which is offering FREE admission to the museum!

Launched on January 18, 2024, during OMA's centennial year, Access for All at OMA is a monthly free day dedicated to the community. On the third Thursday of each month, OMA will extend hours from 10 AM to 8 PM, offering free admission to all visitors. Each event will feature live performances, educational experiences, and more! Sketching materials will be available to visitors between 5 pm and 7 pm, and a docent-led highlights tour will be held at 7 pm.

Added bonus SunRail will comp train fare if you show your (free) eventbrite registration to the gallery event.

"Access for All at OMA" is generously supported by the Art Bridges Foundation's Access for All program.

Savannah Street Art

When I first looked up local street art I did not find much in Savannah’s core downtown but just a short drive south of the main strip, was a super cool area filled with art!

The day I went we were so lucky to be there when the Russian Ballet was scheduled to perform. The group did mini scenes from the Nutcracker. The ladies were so talented and the costumes were beautiful. The performances are done right outside the museum and there are picnic tables for viewing or you can stand.

Closed on Mondays and on Thanksgiving Day

Tickets are $15 + fees or $7 + fees for kids, $12 + fees for seniors, first responders & military.

Wynwood Art Scene

Wynwood is an inner city of Miami, not far from Midtown Miami and the Design District. Once an empty crime filled neighborhood, Wynwood is now a thriving art district. The first gallery opened in 2000 and now there are close to 40 galleries and hundreds of works of art in the area.

There is plenty of street parking but there is a garage in the middle of the action that makes parking easier. The Wynwood Garage has a massive mural on it and is easy to spot!

The Cuban Museum

The American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora is a culturally-specific museum of memory, dedicated to showcasing and documenting the history, culture, and contributions of the Cuban exile community through exhibitions and programming in the arts and the humanities.

Forever Celia

This exhibit takes a look into the life of the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz, in the context of her journey as a Cuban exile, fashion trailblazer, and music icon.

It is $12 to enter the museum and explore the exhibit.

20190907_103152.jpg

Music

The exhibit goes through the history of Celia’s music. Celia was a part of salsa’s early history. Salsa is a blend of son montuno, guaracha, cha-cha-cha and mambo. Celia recorded music with Johnny Pacheco, who is credited with coining the term salsa music. The most famous record the two recorded together is “Celia and Johnny”.

While there is music playing throughout the exhibit, make sure to listen to the hanging headphones and watch the videos. There are more musical performances and video clips throughout the years that tie everything together.

20190816_221653.jpg

Azucar!

Celia has been known to say out “AZUCAR!” but did you know the back story?

During one of her visits in Miami, Celia ordered a coffee at a Cuban restaurant. When they asked her if she took sugar, she answered “Of course, chico! Show me a Cuban who doesn’t like sugar (azucar) in their coffee.” At a show that night, she told the story to the crowd and they roared with laughter. Fans began requesting “the sugar story” and Celia’s cry of “AZUCAR!” became her catchphrase.

Later it also became the name of a Little Havana Ice Cream Shop where photos of the musician hang.

20190907_102504.jpg

Fashion

Celia has always stayed true to her afro-carribbean roots. She often incorporated traditional pieces into her wardrobe such as the classic Cuban rumba dress. However, her fashion was not limited to just the clothing. Her accessories were also show stoppers. From large statement necklaces, colorful wigs (often matching her outfit), and incredible head pieces would bring the whole look together.

Located on 1200 Coral Way, Miami. And hours are Tuesday to Saturday – 10 AM to 4:30 PM
Sundays – 12 PM to 4 PM.

Sacramento Art Scene

I love supporting local artists. Admiring art filled with culture and meeting the artists makes exploring a new area 20 times more exciting! You'll come to find I have an obsession with street art and love to search for murals. I was thrilled to find out my trip to Sacramento aligned with the Wide Open Walls Art Festival. There were tons of murals going up, events going on lots to see! Luckily these works of art stay up so if you missed the festival you can still explore these beauties anytime you are in the area!

Local Art

We went to an event at Love is a Verb to see Raul's new work. He is an artist sharing pieces of his life mixed with his Mexican culture.

By far one of the coolest things I encountered while in town was "Free Art Fridays". There is an account on Instagram sharing posts from local artists that have created original art and hide the piece around Sacramento. They give clues on location and then whoever finds it, claims it, keeps it and lets the rest of Instagram know it's be found. It's every Friday! I wish I got to a piece on time, but there is always next time!
