Music

The exhibit goes through the history of Celia’s music. Celia was a part of salsa’s early history. Salsa is a blend of son montuno, guaracha, cha-cha-cha and mambo. Celia recorded music with Johnny Pacheco, who is credited with coining the term salsa music. The most famous record the two recorded together is “Celia and Johnny”.

While there is music playing throughout the exhibit, make sure to listen to the hanging headphones and watch the videos. There are more musical performances and video clips throughout the years that tie everything together.

Azucar!

Celia has been known to say out “AZUCAR!” but did you know the back story?

During one of her visits in Miami, Celia ordered a coffee at a Cuban restaurant. When they asked her if she took sugar, she answered “Of course, chico! Show me a Cuban who doesn’t like sugar (azucar) in their coffee.” At a show that night, she told the story to the crowd and they roared with laughter. Fans began requesting “the sugar story” and Celia’s cry of “AZUCAR!” became her catchphrase.

Later it also became the name of a Little Havana Ice Cream Shop where photos of the musician hang.

Fashion

Celia has always stayed true to her afro-carribbean roots. She often incorporated traditional pieces into her wardrobe such as the classic Cuban rumba dress. However, her fashion was not limited to just the clothing. Her accessories were also show stoppers. From large statement necklaces, colorful wigs (often matching her outfit), and incredible head pieces would bring the whole look together.
